Paying Attention to Directions!

Have you ever stopped to think about what you should be paying attention to?

Have you ever stopped to consider what you should be focusing on?

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself what is really important?

I realize that these simple 3 questions are making you think. Good! That is what they are intended to do.

Well, go ahead and think... Hit pause... log off and come back! This blog will be here waiting for you.

Welcome back to those who temporarily left and returned. Now that you attempted to pay attention to the questions, focused on how to answer those questions, you may have realized that it was not that important. Well done! No matter whether you determined that answering the question was important or not, well done!

The focus of this little exercise is on following directions. Directions may be given at any time and from anyone, but we are here to discuss the directions you give to yourself. Hopefully, this put a smile on your face and perhaps a sigh of relief.

Here are a few new questions:

1.  Have you ever stopped to think about the directions or instructions you placed on yourself?

2.  Think about what standards you set in place.

3.  Think about what you hold to be important.

Think about your emotions, especially when they fight against your thoughts.

I know that the last statement may be puzzling to you, so let me explain. When your emotions rise, they get loud. They demand to be heard, acknowledged, and responded to. For example, if you are waiting for an important call, you pace the floor anxiously. Anxious is an emotion that starts small (when you can control it), but it can grow if you allow anxiousness to stay around. It is your thought response that can either minimize anxiousness or allow it to grow (thought to be still, patient, sit down...).

So, think about your emotions, especially when they fight against your thoughts.

Or, think about your thoughts, especially when they fight against your emotions.

This is your assignment for the month. Pay attention to the directions that your emotions and your thoughts are taking you. You may be surprised at what you find and which one you are following the most! And you may even find out that some of your thoughts and emotions may not have your best interest in mind!
